Introduction

American roulette is one of the most renowned variations of the game of roulette: the rules are close to those for its counterpart called French roulette. However, the layout and configuration of the bets are different.

American roulette is played using a wheel with 38 pockets, and not 37 as you can find during French roulette games.

Those boxes are numbered from 1 to 36, alternating red and black. Two green cases remain, one being numbered with 0 and the other with 00.

This variation of roulette proves to be less popular than French roulette, since the chances to win are less important.

Indeed, if the white marble stops on the double zero box on the wheel during a game of American roulette, all the bets placed by players will be lost.

Objective of American Roulette

The aim of American roulette remains the same as for other variations of roulette: betting on the winning number and colour, which are announced by the croupier as soon as the wheel and the marble stop.

Proceedings of American Roulette

The number of players is unlimited and each player has a pile of chips in a specific colour, in order not to create errors and confusion in the mind of croupiers, who have to gather and distribute the bets.

  1. As soon as the first round of bets is done for all players, the croupier utters the famous sentence “No more bets!”.
  2. Then, they spin the cylinder anti-clockwise and throw the white marble clockwise.
  3. Once the marble has stopped on a numbered box, the croupier announces the winning box.

Betting at American Roulette

Here is something for you to familiarise yourself with the American roulette layout and the jargon specific to the game: a “Five Number Bet” refers to the first five numbers on the grid, i.e. 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3.

When it comes to types of game and bets proper, they are the same as for French and English roulette: more specifically, you can find the Straight Up Bet, Split Bet (à cheval) or Corner Bet (carré), which are the most popular and profitable.
